The XPRIZE Foundation, which runs the global Carbon Removal competition, has announced its list of the top 100 companies. Carbonaught made the cut, following up on its Top 25 finish in 2022—the recognition that set the company in motion.
The less satisfying news? We didn’t make the Top 20, while four enhanced weathering companies did. Those finalists are now competing for a prize pool exceeding USD $85M. It’s the kind of moment where one’s mother might say, “Well done, good effort,” but there’s an undeniable wince at not being in contention.
That said, we know several of the teams still in the race, and we genuinely wish them well. Mati, Silicate—we’re watching.
Stepping back, the XPRIZE has been a defining force in carbon dioxide removal (CDR) over the past four years. In an era where carbon, climate, and credits have seen their reputations bruised, XPRIZE has been a rare safe harbour—in no small part due to the personal commitment of a certain trillionaire. But beyond the funding, the competition has been a catalyst, bringing together an eclectic mix of technologies, sharp minds, and a shared mission.
For that—and for helping bring Carbonaught to life—we are very grateful.
