Introduction
Located an hour west of Cairns in Australia's tropical far north Queensland, Project Mareeba sits roughly 700m above sea level in the productive Atherton tablelands.
This is pioneer country. It rewards those that can adapt and thrive despite the cyclones, crocodiles, snakes and dingoes. Having been personally chased by a pack of the latter I hope that I've paid my dues.
In this environment, Howe Farming stands out as a highly respected name. Renowned as one of the nation’s largest horticulture and sugarcane enterprises, they are also widely recognised for their progressive farming practices. Beyond their reputation for excellence, they also happen to be a pleasure to work with.
Project Mareeba seeks to explore the full potential of enhanced rock weathering in this diversified farming operation with the goal of fully understanding both the technical and commercial effects of deploying this new technology into an already market leading operation. Considerations range from domestic and export market impact to positive effects on its main catchment: the Great Barrier Reef.
The project is in pilot phase with an estimated carbon removal potential of ~2,000 tonnes per annum once at full capacity.
